Brussel Sprouts...these poor little misunderstood cabbages are known to be smelly, mushy and flavorless. What else can you except from a vegetable that has been boiled to death. I was never really introduced to brussle sprouts as a kid, but one day years ago when I was nannying one of my kiddos ask me to make her brussel sprouts. Her mom was the one who told me that if you put them under the broiler, they get crispy! One taste and I was hooked.
I have made these since but this time is different. I added...BACON. You're welcome Kenny. ;) <3
My recipe for delicious and convincing brussel sprouts:
That is it! Take the brussel sprouts out of the plastic bag and cut them into equal sizes. I cut mine either in half or in quarters depending on size. The closer they are in size, the more evenly they will all cook together. Spread the cut sprouts out on a cookie sheet then drizzle with about 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Then, generously sprinkle garlic powder, salt and pepper onto these beauties. Use a cook's best tools, your hands, and toss the sprouts in all of the added flavoring aides. Now, the fun and surprising part. Cut 6 pieces of raw bacon into half inch pieces and spread along the tops of the sprouts. When you put the sprouts in the oven the bacon renders (when the fatty parts slowly start to melt) and cooks the sprouts in just enough bacon fat! Yummy!
Put your ready to cook sprouts in a 400 degree oven for about 18mins. The goal is for them to be fork tender and crispy from the high heat of the oven. In my opinion, the crispier the better! If they are tender and not at your desired crispiness, put them under the broiler, but make sure to stand by! You don't want to burn them.
These were also delicious as leftovers. I just put the sprout and bacon mixture into the toaster oven on bake, delish!
